Victory Bonds Will Help Stop This – Kultur vs Humanity
Unknown Artist, 1918

Germany’s invasion of neutral Belgium in the autumn of 1914, and the resulting atrocities meted out to members of the civilian population, helped to spawn numerous allied propaganda images aimed at portraying Germans as sinister and Godless ‘Huns’, bent on the destruction of the civilized world.  Zeppelin attacks on French, British, and Belgian cities, and submarine attacks against enemy and neutral shipping only added to the anti-German fervor. The resulting posters were often highly graphic.  In this case, the June 1918 sinking of the hospital ship Llandovery Castle (which carried Red Cross markings) was used to rally civilian rage in Canada especially, into renewed efforts to help win the war through purchasing Victory Bonds.
