Sheldon Thompson, a Connecticut native, settled on the Niagara Frontier before the War of 1812. With various partners he engaged in shipbuilding and forwarding. In the early 1820s he founded Sheldon Thompson & Co., with headquarters in Buffalo. In 1840 he became mayor of Buffalo, the first elected by the citizenry.
