Cataract Engine Company No. 1 Minutes, February 2, 1832.

Buffalo's first engine company, Cataract No.1, was organized on December 16, 1824. Two years later an engine house was built on Washington Street for the company's hand pumper and leather hoses. Buffalo's fire department was all-volunteer until 1880. Firefighters took pride in appearance, as evidenced in the discussion about uniforms in the minutes of February 2, 1832.
