Grueby Faience Company was established in 1897 and remained in business until 1920. Besides their line of art pottery the company made garden statuary and architectural tiles. William Grueby is responsible for developing a matte glaze that became one of the corner stones of arts & Crafts pottery. Gustav Stickley, an eminent figure in the Arts & Crafts movement, viewed Grueby pottery as capturing "precisely the quiet mood sought."
